Advantages: Chemicals are completely removed from laboratory eliminating any risk of exposure. Very low maintenance on the ductwork and exhaust fan necessary. If sized and installed correctly, the exhaust fan will be located at the end of the ductwork far from the operator. This provides a quiet and pleasant working environment.

Disadvantages: High start up cost which mainly constitutes the ductwork installation, hacking of building walls or ceilings and exhaust fan installation. High running costs as air-conditioning is constantly being removed from the laboratory. High energy consumption as the fume hood is kept running practically all day long. It is not very environmentally friendly as chemicals are being exhausted into the atmosphere."/>
