Antimicrobial Effectiveness of IsocideTM Powder Coating on Esco Biological Safety Cabinets Author: Dian Susanti, Fajar Mustika and Alexander Atmadi

Many undesired bioburden cause the contaminations on equipment and facilities used by lab professionals, whereas it is critical for them to keep everything clean and free from any health hazard. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of IsocideTM powder coating by performing two types of testing adopting JIS and ASTM standards.

Validation of AHP decontamination on BSC 4ft using Mobile Biovap Author: Elisabeth Noviana D. P. and Sahala Louis A. S.

Hydrogen peroxide is one of the decontamination agent widely used nowadays as it is non-carcinogenic but highly effective against micro-organisms. Esco Mobile BioVap™ is a hydrogen peroxide bio-decontamination system which employs a process of atomizing hydrogen peroxide sterilant to create dry fog after it is injected into the space. This study is purposed to validate the procedure of class II biosafety cabinet decontamination using Mobile BioVap™ system.

Dust Introduction Test to Determine ULPA Filter Loading Characteristics in Class II Biosafety Cabinets Author: Lin Xiang Qian, Alexander Atmadi and Ng Kah Fei

One of the most important component in any biosafety cabinet is the filter as it removes the bioagents that may be introduced in the course of work inside the biosafety cabinet. However, with continuous use of the cabinet, the filter would get more loaded with time to a point in which the cabinet blower may not be strong enough to overcome the pressure drop across the loaded filter to provide good airflow velocities for operator protection. Therefore, this paper serves to investigate how the loading of the filters of a Class II Type A2 cabinet would affect the airflow velocities and how the downflow distribution changes across the face of the entire filter.

Energy Efficient Biosafety Cabinets Author: Alexander Atmadi

When selecting potentially power-consuming equipment, such as a biosafety cabinet, the key to face those problems is energy saving. Esco’s solution to the abovementioned problems is to provide energy efficient product lines, such as the Airstream Class II and Labculture Plus Class II biological safety cabinets.

Risks and Benefits Assessment of UV light system in Biosafety Cabinet Author: Dian Susanti

Many BSC users are insist to equipped their cabinet with UV system and manufacturers have to be aware if their BSC properties could be experiencing significant effect due to major airflow disturbance issue. As manufacturer, Esco has to accommodate our valued customers wish, it is by doing risk and benefit assessment of BSC-UV integration system, so the both sides appeal will be retain in some melting jar, and the best choice would be obtained. Esco UV lamp emitting 253.7 nm, this wavelength is including in UVC wavelength range, so the following experiment and discussion will be more concern about this matter.

Sound Level Measurement on Biosafety Cabinets Author: Alexander Atmadi

Sound means those vibrations composed of frequencies capable of being detected by ears, and the intensity is commonly measured in decibel (dB). Prolonged exposure to loud sound intensity can lead to fatigue and distraction, which can be fatal during a contamination-sensitive work performed in biosafety cabinets. In this paper, the Esco LA2-4L1 biosafety cabinet was tested to yield an extremely low noise of 50.3 dBA, when measured with high-grade sound level meter, inside a semi-anechoic chamber that alleviates the background noise, reflective surface, and reverberation effect. This translates to the safety and comfort for the user, when performing the high-risk, contamination-sensitive work inside this biosafety cabinet.

The Role of the Pressure Gauge in HEPA-Filtered Clean Air Devices Author: Lin Xiang Qian

HEPA-filtered clean air devices – systems containing both a fan and a HEPA filter – are prevalent today in many modern applications. They include laminar flow / biological safety cabinets (hoods) for laboratory applications, in addition to cleanroom equipment such as fan filter units. This technical paper outlines the theory of operation of the pressure gauge, which is commonly used in the industry as an indicator on HEPA-filtered clean air devices. Most significantly, common misconceptions as regards the functionality of pressure gauges with regards to HEPA-filtered clean air devices are discussed in detail. Proper usage practices are also recommended.

What Makes a Biological Safety Cabinet Safe Author: Lin Xiang Qian

Some people may not appreciate it, but a biological safety cabinet is a more complicated device than simply a large metal box with a fan and some HEPA filters. Similarly, keeping a safety cabinet performing safely is also a more complicated process than simply "changing the filters regularly". This technical paper was written to address some of these myths and fallacies, and to educate laboratory scientists, cabinet users, facility safety officers, and other people - in the hope that the knowledge shared here will improve the safety of our environment for the common good.

Airflow Study of Esco BC2-4S7 Biological Safety Cabinet at Various Temperatures Author: Bekti Tri Sumaryati and Pangihutan Sitanggang

Room temperature is the best environment for Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) to work properly. Since the room temperature of laboratory can vary due to effect of the environmental temperature, this study was conducted to determine the work of BSC under various temperatures. Esco conducted this study by observing the airflow change at various temperatures. The results showed that Esco BC2-4S7 BSC still provides personnel and product protection at various temperatures.
