Advantages: No complicated and expensive ductwork installation. Air-conditioning is not removed from the laboratory thus saving costs and energy.  As the exhaust air filtered and recirculating back into the laboratory, no contaminated air is exhausted back into the atmosphere like in the ducted fume hood.

Disadvantages: Filters must be regularly replaced and maintained. There is no developed technology to detect filter saturation levels. Carbon filter efficiency will have to be periodically checked using gas tubes. There is greater risk of chemical exposure using recirculating fume hoods compared with ducted ones especially when the chemical usage and variations are large. The built-in fan is near the operator, so noise may be an issue with the operator."/>
